| The experience of culture shock is a rite of passage for anthropologists and is increasingly significant as the world globalises. The most well know model - the u curve from loving to the new culture, to loathing it and finally accepting it - was presented by Finnish-Canadian Kalervo Obeg. Drawing upon a variety of primary sources, this demonstrates that Oberg was partly raised in the Finnish immigrant utopian commune in British Columbia known as Sointula, where his father was a senior figure. It argues that the commune deeply influenced Oberg, that its history exemplifies important aspects of his culture shock model, and that Oberg’s philosophy - as reflected in his interpretation of culture shock – reflects significant aspects of the philosophy of the commune founder. This utiopian philosophy - including cultural determinism, cultural relativism and stoicism - is shown to underpin culture shock, which can nevertheless be useful if disentangled from it. |
